On April 21st, 2016, the world lost yet another music icon. Prince, a multi-platinum recording artist, was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota. As shocked fans and family members await the autopsy of the famous singer, ENN remembers the legendary performer.

Prince Rogers Nelson was born June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson, a jazz musician. Growing up, Prince was a fan of music, teaching himself to play piano, guitar, and drums. By 1978, Prince signed to Warner Bros. Records, officially jump starting his career in music. He would go on to drop his debut album, For You, that same year and his self entitled sophomore album the following year. “For You” peaked at 163 on the Billboard U.S. 200, while “Prince” would peak at 22.

In 1980, he dropped his third album, Dirty Mind, and a year later he debuted his fourth album, “Controversy”, charting at 45 and 21 respectively.

Finally, in 1982, Prince dropped the album that helped launch his career. Titled 1999, the 20 track album would peak as high as number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and featured popular songs “Little Red Corvette” and “Delirious”, both of which would be top 10 singles.

Prince would then go on to start his own band, called “The Revolution” and together they would drop arguably Prince’s best album, “Purple Rain”, in 1984.

“Purple Rain” would go on to peak at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, officially becoming Prince’s first number 1 album. The album would be followed by a movie of the same name, that grossed over $70 million in the box office. Prince would also have two number 1 hit singles on “Purple Rain” in “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy”. The title song, “Purple Rain” would peak at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Prince was nominated for both Academy and Grammy awards for “Purple Rain”, won three Grammys and an Academy Award.

After the success of “1999” and “Purple Rain”, Prince release multiple albums, almost every year until 2015 and was working on another album at the time of his death.

Prince’s total discography totaled 39, winning 7 Grammys, and becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the music industry.

Prince’s autopsy is expected to be available to the public in 3 to 4 weeks. Family members and close friends of the singer held a private service and Prince was cremated.
