On the Field with the Pride of OU
Norman, OK – Saturday, Sept. 10, was the home opener for the University of Oklahoma Sooners vs. University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. It was also Band and Spirit Day for hundreds of high school band members from surrounding schools, including one of our very own Lake Ridge Eagles.
Eagles Color Guard member, Summer Johnson, 9, joined The Pride of OU during their halftime performance in front of 87,037 screaming Sooner fans. “It was awesome to represent Lake Ridge Color Guard and an honor to be chosen to perform in front of so many people,” explained Johnson. “My band director, Mr. Bradley Bonebrake, was extremely supportive and excited for me.”
Band and Spirit Day gives high school students an opportunity to rehearse and perform a routine with The Pride of OU Band. Students sent in an application and video to a committee for review and selection. Band members from Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma were all chosen to represent their schools. “I made so many new friends from other schools and had such a great time,” added Johnson.
OU Color Guard member, Rebecca Wilson, enjoys the Spirit Day atmosphere. “My favorite part of Spirit Day is to see how excited all of the high school students are to come and perform and how much they enjoy being in band.”
Johnson performed the routine, “Kings of Leon”, with The Pride. Johnson said, “It felt surreal performing on the field but once the band started playing it felt like home.”
