In a world full of different insulated cups, Stanley Tumbler cup has been increasing in popularity, influence, and design. First made by William Stanley Jr., who created the Stanley flask in 1913. According to the Stanley website, “he fused vacuum insulation and the strength of steel in one portable bottle, inventing the all-steel vacuum bottle we know and love today.”
The design of the Stanley cups has evolved over the years. The cup is made from stainless steel, and it is able to fit comfortably in hand with an integrated handle on either top or side of the cup. It also has a secure lid with multiple drinking options, a straw opening, a wide mouth for drinking and a top cover to prevent spills. The design of the cup is not only functional but also stylish, with various color and design choices on the Stanley Cup website. Junior Brooke Jackson’s favorite part of the Stanley cup is the handle.
“The Stanley that I have is the one with the handle and it moves at the top. I like it a lot, I can just hold it or carry it around with me wherever I go,” Jackson said.
Senior, Lilliana Jimenez, enjoys the convenience of the integrated handle everyday.
“I think the thing that makes it different is the handle and I can hold it, because I use mine all day. Also that it can hold alot of water and it keeps my drinks cold for days, and if I put ice in it it won’t melt,” Jimenez said.
On the Stanley website a person is able to see all the various offers of cups, water bottles and tumblers. The prices vary from $20 to $75. While the Stanley Tumbler cups may be priced higher than other insulated water bottles, the Stanley Tumbler has a lifetime warranty, meaning that a manufacturer will repair or replace any defective parts for their products and comes at no additional cost. Senior Ella Billotto finds the price for the Stanley cup reasonable as it can hold up to 40 oz of water.
“I do think the cup is worth the price because the size of it is perfect. I think it’s good for when I have issues with drinking water, the Stanley has helped me keep myself hydrated, especially with the size of it. I hold a lot of water and I think the price is decent for the size,” Billotto said.
There have been other companies who have been making insulated cups that look very similar to the Stanley Tumbler cup, and have been selling them for a cheaper price. Art Teacher, Mary Boyd – Long has a liking to her insulated cup that she bought on amazon more, compared to the Stanley Cup she got for Christmas.
“I bought just a knockoff one on Amazon, for under $20 and I wanted to see if it was something I really wanted before I spent $40. But then I got one for Christmas, and honestly I think I like the one I got on Amazon better than my real Stanley,” Boyd-Long said.
The Stanley tumbler cups are commonly known for their durability, along with the paint overlay. The stainless steel ensures the maintenance of the tumbler, as well as preventing any scratches and dents. Billoto has noticed that the resistance on her Stanley is outstanding.
“I got my Stanely for christmas and I’ve noticed that it doesn’t dent as easily or get scratches.the paint has chips occasionally but only small parts, and you can’t exactly see the scratches or chips because it’s not all metal,” Billotto said.
The popularity of the Stanley Tumbler Cup has grown throughout the last year. Gaining popularity from TikTok, users have been posting videos of the tumblers and their durability, sleek look, and design. The social platform contributed to the cup’s rise in popularity on the platform, from influencers and everyday users commenting on the cup. Junior, Angelica Riojas’ theory of the Stanley cups popularity is because of the influence of popular social media platforms.
“I think people are choosing the Stanley cup because it is becoming a really big trend. When stuff goes viral on TikTok people buy in and they cave. That’s why I think some people buy them, some do buy them for other purposes, but I feel like the main thing is because they went viral in TikTok.” Rojas said.
Junior Alex Shellenberger believes that aside from the Stanley cups popularity of social media, the tumbler would have still gotten desired because of its well manufactured design.
“I feel like they got popular because they’re such a good product. I feel like they would have gotten popular anyway. It’s just kind of the flow of water bottler becoming in and out, like the Hydro Flask and now the Stanley,” Shellenberger siad.
There has been a growing community of people who have developed a genuine obsession with the Stanley Tumbler cup. In honor of Valentine’s day, the brand released a new limited edition of cups. When the cups were released in various stores, including Target, some fans went into a frenzy. There have been videos where customers are gathered around displays showing very aggressive actions, trying to get their hands on one of the limited edition cups. Rojas thinks that people who show signs of obsession are only doing it to please other people and not truly for themselves.
“I think it’s ridiculous because the cup that I have was $35 and I could not imagine having a collection of those, I think it comes to a point where it becomes an obsession. And when people are doing it just to please everyone else, they are easily influenced by social media. It comes to a point where you’re not doing it because you want the cup, you’re doing it so that other people like you,” Rojas said.
The Stanley Tumbler’s ability to hold a large amount of liquid, is one of the reasons it has gotten much attention from people. The Stanley Tumbler can hold 20 to 40 ounces depending on the cup design. The large amount of water that the Stanely can hold is recommended for people who are athletes, workers, as well as people who wishes to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Not only can the Stanley Tumbler hold large amounts of liquid, it can keep water and other drinks cold or hot for long periods of time. Junior, Akira Neal, likes that she can use her Stanley to drink water while practicing on the Eagle Elite Drill Team.
“I do think the Stanley is convenient, it is kind of bulky but I like that you don’t have to keep getting up to go and get water. And the water can stay cold for days. I’m on drill team and we work out alot and we need to keep drinking water, so I think it’s convenient especially for athletes,” Neal said.
