Classified as one of the most beloved Disney Princesses, Rapunzel is making a huge comeback with the newly announced live-action remake of “Tangled”. Walt Disney Studios recently revealed the cast for the film, including Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider. While many fans are excited to see the animated classic come to life, others have expressed disappointment and concern over the remake.
The original “Tangled”, released in 2010, continues to be extremely popular and is considered to be a fan favorite among Disney fans. The movie follows lost princess Rapunzel and the charming thief Flynn Rider following a path of self discovery and freedom. Because the film holds such a special place in many people’s hearts, the live-action remake is being held to a high standard.
Deciding to adapt “Tangled” into live-action was a difficult choice with pressure from fans causing hesitation. When the remake was confirmed, many fans were enthusiastic to hear the announcement, while others believed Disney should avoid live action remakes due to the controversy surrounding them. Sophomore Emily Matsler shares her initial excitement at the announcement.
“I’m really excited because I have loved this movie ever since I was little, they will have challenges to face but it is just a really good live action remake,” Matsler said.
Anticipation for the film is already strong. Walt Disney Studios has a reputation with their live action remakes. Some, such as Cinderella, have been praised while others have faced harsh criticism. Because of this, opinions on the upcoming Tangled remake are mixed, with fans unsure whether it will live up to the original. Sophomore Rachel Caballero believes “Tangled” is a good choice for a live action remake, but it has to be done right.
“It would be a very good option, but whatever actor gets the role they have to live up to the fairy tale of the animated version to make it worth watching,” Caballero said.
Live-action remakes can be a sensitive topic, with most fans struggling to imagine a remake living up to the original movie. Many watchers can feel strongly connected to the originals, which makes it difficult for the remakes to satisfy fans. The fans look for the same storytelling and feelings they got watching for the first time. Live-action remakes hold high expectations because fans have established opinions on the story being told. Caballero believes with such a passionate fan base, the live-action “Tangled” release will be interesting for past viewers.
“Honestly this appeals to the people who grew up with it because it’s more interesting for us to see the story again,” Caballero said.
Walt Disney Studios is known for having a controversial reputation surrounding their live action remakes. With Disney having many remakes under their belt, both beloved and hated, the pressure to create another hit is high. Junior Meghan Madrid shares her opinion on the past Disney live action remakes and her hope that previous mistakes won’t be repeated.
“They made the live-action Little Mermaid kinda bad, I hope that they have learned from their mistakes to make this one great,” Madrid said.
Movies are a labor of love, they inspire feelings and emotions within the viewers. From children to adults, fairy tales are meant to spread happiness and teach valuable lessons. As the excitement and anticipation grows, audiences from around the world are waiting to see if Disney’s live-action Tangled will live up to the high expectations set by the original.
