March Madness is one of the biggest and most exciting events in college sports. Held every spring, the tournament features 68 college basketball teams competing in a single elimination format to determine the national champion. Because teams are eliminated after just one loss, every game is intense and unpredictable.
The tournament features basketball teams competing against each other for a championship. It’s similar to a regular season, but focuses on the tournament. During March Madness, teams compete in a bracket and must win games to move on, while losing teams are eliminated. Tori Walter, a senior and the Varsity Boys Basketball Manager, finds March Madness exciting and enjoyable because it emphasizes the competition for the win and excites fans.
“I would say it’s just like a really fun period of time, because teams get more aggressive and eager to fight for the title, and that’s when a lot of famous people especially come to watch these players, and a lot of scouts. It’s based off rank, and kind of a bracket where if you win, you move on,” Walter said.
March Madness is famous for its surprising upsets, when lower ranked teams defeat higher ranked favorites. These unexpected wins make the tournament exciting for fans and create memorable moments in sports history. Roman Dulin, a junior, finds the tournament exciting, especially with higher ranked teams playing each other.
“You start off with 68 teams, then eventually it goes to Sweet 16, then the Elite 8, and Final 4, then the championship game. I’m going for Arkansas because there’s Acuff,” Dulin said.
Another major part of March Madness is filling out tournament brackets, where fans try to predict the winner of each game. Millions of people participate in bracket challenges each year, even if they do not normally watch college basketball. Josiah Smith, a junior, believes Houston has a strong chance of winning since they reached the championship the previous year and have strong players.
“A bracket is just the compilation of teams that are going to be playing in the tournament itself. So you’ll have similar teams in the same bracket. I’m cheering for Houston, they have a chance. They went to the championship last year I believe,” Smith said.
The name “March Madness” comes from the intense excitement and unpredictability of the tournament. Because the games are single elimination, surprising results often happen. Ethan Caldwell, a freshman, talks about his excitement during the month of March. Caldwell follows the tournament closely, taking pride in his basketball knowledge.
“I love when March finally comes, because as soon as it hits the first I know it’s March Madness time. I personally love basketball, I’ve watched and played all my life, so when big basketball events like this come around, I’m the first person to know everything about the teams, upsets, brackets, all that amazing stuff,” Caldwell said.
March Madness has become a major part of American sports culture. Games are broadcast nationwide, and millions of people follow the tournament. Many of the players in the tournament later go on to play professionally in leagues like the National Basketball Association (NBA). The tournament also brings attention and pride to colleges whose teams perform well. Adrian Holloway, a sophomore, highlights the culture when it comes to March Madness, comparing it to being as big as the Superbowl.
“March Madness is built around excitement, competition, and participation across America. Millions of people follow it, watch the games, and participate in traditions. It’s so cool to see. Everyone comes together about something they are all passionate about,” Holloway said.
March Madness is known for its high-stakes games, passionate fans, surprising upsets, and dramatic finishes, making it one of the most exciting events in sports each year.
