Senior assassin is a high-stakes, student-run game that transforms everyday life into a strategic competition filled with suspense, surprise, and creativity. Played by high school seniors, the game assigns each participant a target to “eliminate” by splashing them with water, all while avoiding becoming a target themselves. What begins as a fun tradition quickly turns into an intense battle of awareness and planning, as players form alliances and make schedules. Senior assassin blends thrill and strategy, making it one of the most memorable and talked-about experiences of senior year.
Senior Assassin is played near the end of the year. It’s a mix of tag, hide and seek, and strategy, played outside of school using water guns. Each player is secretly assigned a target, and your job is to eliminate that person by spraying them. Michael Johnson, a senior, attributes his success in the game to his strategy.
“I’m always on edge. Someone can run up to me trying to get me out at any unexpected moment, but that wouldn’t happen because I’m too good at the game. I’ve already gotten two out of three of my targets all because I get them at the most unexpected moments,” Johnson said.
To keep things fair players usually agree on specific rules, such as safe zones like schools and workplaces. Immunity conditions apply when you wear goggles or floaties. This temporarily protects a player from being eliminated. David Martinez, a senior, has made the game more exciting by not using his immunity tools.
“Everyone wears their goggles everywhere because it’s the one thing that’s protecting them from getting out in the game. I never go anywhere with them because it gives the people targeting me a fair experience, but I like not wearing them because I know if someone comes to me I can outrun them, so I don’t even need them,” Martinez said.
To eliminate a target the person must spray them with a water gun before the round ends while recording it for proof. At the same time another player is assigned to eliminate you, creating a continuous chain of players hunting and being hunted. Once someone successfully gets their targets out, they are guaranteed to move forward as long as they survive. Senior Emma Wilson was eliminated in the first round.
“I forgot my goggles one day, but I was just going to Chipotle and didn’t think it was a big deal because I knew I wouldn’t be there long. Unfortunately I was very wrong. I was leaving Chipotle, thinking I was in the clear until my target ran up to me. I ran but holding my Chipotle bag I was unable to open my car door, so that’s when my target got me out,” Wilson said.
Although there are immunity tools, there is one event that stops them from working at all. The purge is when you can get anyone out, not just your targets. Goggles and floaties lose all purpose, and no one is safe. It’s a complete free for all, but safe spaces like school and workplaces still apply until you completely leave for the day. Joshua Brown, a senior, appreciates purge days because of the added excitement.
“I love this game, but people wear their goggles way too much, meaning I can never get them out. When purge days come along, I love going out to get people because it’s so much easier. Everyone is trying to do normal things. The only problem is they have no protection, making it way easier for me to get my targets out or anyone in general,” Brown said.
The game’s excitement and intensity is strengthened by prize money. All participants that entered the game paid an entry fee, and the last person standing wins the prize pool. Knowing that prize money is waiting encourages many people to try their hardest to win. Senior Ava Taylor believes the prize pool is the best part of the game.
“Obviously everyone joined because it’s traditional and it’s super fun, but with over a hundred people joining, the prize pool isn’t small. So everyone is playing knowing exactly what’s on the line,” Taylor said.
Senior assassin is meant to be fun, and rules are put in place to ensure a responsible and safe competition. With many seniors planning for their future, senior assassin provides them with a way to let loose and enjoy being kids one last time.
