Jaynes, Girls Varsity Swimming Make Splash at Districts
The Class 5A District VIII Swimming/Diving Meet was held at the Mansfield Independent School District Natatorium on Jan. 22 and 23. When the waves in the pool subsided, Lake Ridge sophomore, Hunter Jaynes came away with the gold medal for one meter platform diving. It is the second district title for Jaynes, who is the defending district champion.”I felt confident going into district,” Jaynes explained. “I knew I had a lead on everybody in my district for awhile so I felt comfortable that I was going to do well.”
Jaynes finished the competition with an impressive score of 508.95. The top score was more than 100 points ahead of second place finisher, Dalton Mix from Legacy High School, with a final score of 397.20 and third place finisher, Parker Barrett from Legacy High School with a final score of 349.50. “I expect Hunter (Jaynes) to win regionals and be a contender for the state championship,” said diving Head Coach Jerry Smith.
Jaynes will be preparing for regionals and the state championships by focusing on the board work and entries it will take to receive high scores from the judges.
The Lady Eagles Varsity Swimming Team also brought home the district championship trophy. Head Coach Blake Kahla has high expectations for his team ahead of regionals. “We are going to be practicing a lot,” he said. “I expect Hunter (Jaynes) to finish in the top three at State and I expect all three girl relay teams to make it out of regionals.”
The Lady Eagles Varsity Swim Team brought home district championships in the 400 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle relay, 100 freestyle individual (Rhiannan Boseman, sophomore ), 100 butterfly individual (Kylie Sheppard, sophomore), 200 individual medley (Kylie Sheppard), and the 100 breaststroke individual (Khadijah Brown, freshman).
