The Toilet Paper Week 7: #HalloweenThrowback: Teacher Edition
Eagles, you can finally bring out your spooky decorations and pumpkins because it is Halloween time. Eagle Nation News asked Lake Ridge teachers to send in their throwback Halloween pictures. There were a number of teachers that replied, here are the best of the best:
1. Lake Ridge Algebra teacher, Dionnica Wilson.
What were you for Halloween?
I guess a 70’s… person.
Why did you choose to be that for Halloween?
That was the theme of the party.
What was your favorite Halloween memory?
We would go to our church, because we didn’t necessarily call it “Halloween”. We used to just have fun and games and food. All the youth came out and just enjoyed ourselves.
2. Lake Ridge Dance and Drill Coach, Amie Harris.
What were you for Halloween?
A lamb.
Why did you choose to be that for Halloween?
Because my mother hates me!
What was your favorite Halloween memory?
Last year taking my daughter, when she was two. She actually understood what Halloween was instead of just holding out a bag.
What does Halloween mean to you?
A time to dress up and pretend that you’re somebody else that you’re not in your normal, daily life.
3. Lake Ridge AP World History Teacher, Jennifer Swegler.
What were you for Halloween?
A pumpkin.
Why did you choose to be that for Halloween?
Pretty sure my parents found the costume and they thought it was super cute, so I was super excited to be a pumpkin. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, and technically it’s a Jack-O-Latern.
What was your favorite Halloween memory?
The year we did it as a family. So I was Dorthy, and we spent over an hour gluing sequins to red pair of shoes. My brother was the cowardly lion, our Schnauzer was Toto the dog, and my mom was the scarecrow. We went trick or treating family themed.
What does Halloween mean to you?
Halloween means memories of family time and decorating. My mom always got really big into carving the Jack-O-Laterns and so I still do that even though she doesn’t live in the area anymore. I’ll call her and go “Mom, what are you carving this year?” and she’ll tell me what she’s carving and then we’ll try to out do each other and we send each other photos of our pumpkins.
4. Lake Ridge English and Dance Coach, Kandice San Miguel.
What were you for Halloween?
I was Cinderella!
Why did you chose to dress up as that?
Because I’m a Disney princess.
What was your favorite Halloween memory?
Going to my grandma’s house every Halloween. When I was a kid my parents used to always take us over there and show her our costumes and then she’d give us a ton of candy.
What does Halloween mean to you?
Halloween means having fun with the things that you love and who you are and people that you love because you can be anyone you want to be. So if you are really into something, then you can pretend to be that or, you know, you can just do whatever you want.
5. Lake Ridge AP U.S. History Teacher, Dena Marlar.
What were you for Halloween?
This was a couple years ago and I was a sorceress.
Why did you choose to be that for Halloween?
I wanted to wear a red wig that I had seen at Target, and so I kind of created the whole outfit around the wig. I think when you put those different colored wigs on, it totally makes you unrecognizable. So that’s what I really liked. I also enjoy the whole witch element of Halloween, so that was a different way to dress up as a witch.
What was your favorite Halloween memory?
When I was in the sixth grade, my dad threw a Halloween party for my Girl Scout troop. He did a haunted house where you had to wear a blindfold and touch things. So he had grapes and he said these were eyeballs. It was just super fun, my dad was really really good at throwing kid parties.
What does Halloween mean to you?
Halloween is really my favorite holiday, simply because it’s just fun and you get candy. I love the decorations but if we could find a way to have people give me presents like at Christmas it really would definitely be my favorite.
6. Lake Ridge AP Psychology and History Teacher, Heather Wilson.
What were you for Halloween?
Last Halloween, I was a zebra and my child was a lion.
Why did you choose to be that for Halloween?
When we were in the costume store, I asked her what she wanted to be and she saw the lion and started roaring at the top of her lungs. Mind you, she was a year and a half old so that was a very adequate noise for that age and it was rather humorous. I try to do family costumes, so I wanted to be a zebra because that matches a lion.
What was your favorite childhood Halloween memory?
I don’t have any one particular memory. I have several that are horrible but they’re funny.
What does Halloween mean to you?
Friends, family, and happiness. I had a really tough childhood so Halloween was one of the few happy times I could escape who I was and live a life like someone else and I enjoyed that escapism.
