Teacher Feature: Coach Christensen
Scott Christensen is not just a teacher he is also a golf coach, father, and husband. He juggles all of the roles and still manages to teach hundreds of kids a day.
“It’s very difficult because I’m a teacher first and the coaching part takes me outta the classroom, so it’s very difficult to do that. It is a lot of work, just tying to keep my head above water sometimes is almost impossible. The hard thing to juggle is trying to be a teacher, a coach, a husband and a father. That’s the hard part is trying to find time for the other stuff too and trying to set your priorities,” said Christensen.
But he doesn’t judge himself on whether he is a good teacher or not, he lets the students decide.
“I like to think I am but at the end of the day it’s my students who figure that out. If they are grasping what I’m talking about, that’s all subjective I guess,” said Christensen.
Many of his believe that Coach Christensen is a good teacher.
“I think he’s a brilliant teacher. I think he’s good at what he does. I am able to gain more knowledge about physics through him and he makes it easier through our curriculum,” said junior Hayden Wright.
“I like to think I am but at the end of the day it’s my students who figure that out. If they are grasping what I’m talking about, that’s all subjective I guess,” said Christensen.
Although his absence in the classroom effects the students, Coach Christensen strives to help them understand and pass his class.
“I know that it effects students, it’s the hardest part in my job is trying to help how to keep everyone back on track. I miss 30-40 days a year and teaching physics is very very hard and keeping everyone on track. Astronomy not so much, but with physics it’s hard to keep everyone up because there’s a lot of information that kids understand me speaking and having substitutes frequently makes it very difficult. So I try to help the kids out and be as flexible as I can. But at the end of the day I know it’s a hard situation for everyone,” said Christensen.
