Peyton Manning lifts the Lombardi Trophy after winning Super Bowl Trophy

Looking back at the NFL’s “Golden Bowl” it was a battle of two dominant defenses very resemblant of a traditional NFL game. The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10.

Carolina played well defensively but the Broncos had the fewest yards (194 total yards) for a Super Bowl winning team and only gave up 17 points (Denver had a touchdown on defense), plus the offense had four turnovers, three of which were Cam Newton’s. The Broncos defense made Cam look uncomfortable all night, and even to the point where he gave up on recovering a fumble. Cam Newton said “They just played better than us. I don’t know what you want me to say. They made better plays than us, and that’s what it came down to. We had our opportunities, it wasn’t anything special that we did.” Carolina’s whole offense struggled the receivers constantly dropped passes, the running game never really gained traction, and they Panthers struggled in pass protection. Carolina’s defense played well they only gave up 17 points (Denver had a defensive touchdown) and, as previously mentioned, they gave up the fewest yards to a Super Bowl winner.

The World Champion Denver Broncos the offense wasn’t great or nearly as prolific as it was two years ago when they lost to Seattle in Super Bowl 48, but this team proved the saying “defense wins championships”, and that defense was historic this year. Anchored by edge rushers Demarcus Ware and Super Bowl 50 MVP (most valuable player) Von Miller, and cornerbacks Aqib Talib, Bradley Roby, and Chris Harris Jr it held Carolina to a season low ten points. Denver’s defensive success wasn’t just built off of those 5 guys, but the depth of talent they have all over their defense. As previously mentioned Denver’s offense wasn’t even close to average, but they did enough to win, and didn’t lose the game. Peyton Manning didn’t even have a touchdown pass, and what is most likely his last game. Peyton seemed to just enjoy the moment.
