Hunter Jaynes poses with the gold medal

Saturday, Feb. 20, Lake Ridge diver, Hunter Jaynes, won the 5A State Championship title in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 473.50.  This is the first state championship title for Lake Ridge in it’s four years of operation.

“I’m so proud to represent my coaches and my city at such a high standard on such a big stage,” explained Jaynes in a Star Telegram interview.

Head Diving Coach Jerry Smith was also named male diving coach of the year.  Coach Smith expressed how impressed he is with his young diver.  “Being a sophomore and keeping his head in the meet against divers that finished higher than him last year is a great accomplishment,” Smith said to the Star Telegram.

LRHS Principal Dr. Vonda Nunley expressed her Eagle pride with the state title.  “I was very impressed when Hunter made it to state,” she explained.  “Then when he won it, Hunter was amazing.  His dives were perfect on Friday and on Saturday. We are really excited for Lake Ridge and for the city of Mansfield.  He is the first diver to win a state title in the history of Mansfield, and Hunter is our first state champion at Lake Ridge and he did it in an incredible fashion.”

Jaynes finished almost 30 points ahead of silver medalist, Isaac Lovell of Lubbock, and more than 50 points ahead of bronze medalist, Jacob South from McKinney.
