Seeing a dark, unlit forest in Lynn Creek Park would have been a tragedy for the people of Grand Prairie this holiday season.

But with Joe Pool Lake’s water levels on the rise over the Thanksgiving break, the bright glow from the annual light display at the park was in jeopardy due to a temporary shut-down put in place by city officials.

“It wasn’t ever a consideration that we’ll close and do it next year,” Community Events Organizer Beverly Grogan said to CBS news last week. “It did need a miracle because when we looked at the flood waters over this weekend we were all very concerned about the tradition that the Prairie Lights have become for everybody.”

Searching for an answer to the dilemma, city officials cut some corners and built a new road so drivers could bypass the flood waters and view most of the two-mile display.

The attraction is now officially open from 6 p.m. to 9.p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. With only 75 percent of the lights accessible,  park officials are offering a discounted price to motorists.
