The Eagle offense moves the ball against Summit in a key district game, Oct. 31, 2015.

The Lake Ridge High School football team remained undefeated with a 55-35 win against rival Mansfield Summit on Saturday, clinching the 2015-16 District 14-5A championship for the Eagles.

After being stopped on their first series without a first down, it didn’t take long though for the Eagles offense to get rolling. Lake Ridge quarterback Jett Duffey got the momentum started with his 5- yard rushing touchdown.

“We just kept playing, you know, we didn’t worry about it. We just played the next drive and went one play at a time,” said Duffey, when asked about the early struggles his offense faced. On the day, Duffey rushed for three touchdowns and threw three touchdown passes to receivers Tyler Robinson, TJ Graham and Jimmy Enobaber. Duke Carter also got a taste of the end zone with a 7-yard rushing touchdown.

Leading the defensive charge for the Eagles: Loren Mondey had a fumble recovery and a key sack which forced a punt, Patrick Johnson swatted a pass down causing a fourth down, and Jack Lechman recorded a powerful sack against Summit forcing a punt situation. Also key to victory, Lake Ridge linebacker Caylon Nichols and safety Tyshawn Suddoth registered interceptions.

Nose guard Bronsyn Smith said the defense was looking to be physical going into the game, which rescheduled to Saturday morning after inclement weather Friday night.

“We knew if we played physical in this game that we would come out on defense and win,” said Smith.

The Eagles finish out the regular season on the road Nov. 7 against winless Red Oak at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

With the defeat, Summit (8-1) managed to clinch a payoff berth along with Lancaster High School. Still fighting for their playoff lives with one district spot up for grabs is Mansfield Timberview, Mansfield Legacy and Waxahachie.
