With Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, many students are trying to figure out how to celebrate the holiday of love. Sometimes, there is nothing better to watch on Valentine’s Day than a feel-good movie about two people overcoming all odds and hopelessly falling in love with each other. A love story that makes the audience laugh but also believe that they can too find true love in their own lives.

Netflix is a very popular streaming movie and TV service that a majority of students love. The platform is also known for their romantic comedies about high school students not only finding themselves, but also true love along the way. The “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie series is junior, Natalie Mitchell’s, favorite movie, especially during Valentine’s Day. The third and last installment of the movie series is set to be released on Netflix on February 12th. Mitchell is also a big fan of the “After” movie series and can’t wait for the next installments to be released also.

 “My favorite romance movie is the ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ series. The 3rd movie in the series is about to come out on Netflix, and I’m very excited to watch it because my mom and godmother always do a big movie marathon when we watch all of the movies. I also like the ‘After’ movie series because I really like Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and the storyline of the first movie is so cute,” said Mitchell.

However, some romantic movies are a bit more complicated than a classic, young love story. Sometimes there are plot twists that leave the audience confused and eager to see what happens next to the couple of the story. Mikaley Applewhite, junior, says one of her favorite Valentine’s Day movies is “Sleepless in Seattle,” starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks and “10 Things I Hate About You,” with the late Heath Ledger. 

“ ‘Sleepless In Seattle’ is one of my favorites because it has Tom Hanks, who is one of my favorite actors of all time and ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ because not only does it also have one of my favorite actors, Heath Ledger, but I saw it for the first time at a young age and grew an emotional attachment to it,” said Applewhite.

Other romance movies are more emotional and have a more heartful theme to the overall movie. This includes a possible love triangle where the main character must choose between two other characters in the movie to stay with them forever. Junior, Jada Awuku, said her favorite movie for Valentine’s Day is “The Notebook” because of the overall plot and how sentimental the whole movie is. She also recommends “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” because of the character developments included in the beloved film.

“ ‘The Notebook’ is one of my favorites because it’s very heartfelt and I love the story line. Plus, Ryan Gosling is amazing. ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ is also a favorite. The book is amazing and so is the movie, very suspenseful and amazing characters,” said Awuku

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right movies to watch for the right mood or holiday that could be occurring. Ishi Jacinto, junior, has a couple of movie recommendations for others who would like to watch something emotional yet feel-good during Valentine’s Day this year.

“I recommend ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ obviously the classic and iconic ‘Titanic,’ ‘Sierra Burgess Is A Loser’ and ‘While You Were Sleeping.’ All of these movies are very emotional and I think are ideal for Valentine’s Day,” said Jacinto.

Taking Valentine’s Day to the big screen this year isn’t what many are expecting to do with the ongoing pandemic. Staying home and watching a classic or modern day romance movie on a streaming platform is something students are wanting to do this time around.
